Dr. Oz: Exercise Benefits After Stroke

Dr. Oz: Exercise Benefits Stroke Survivors

A stroke happens when an artery in the brain becomes blocked and blood supply is kept from reaching vital tissues in the brain. If not addressed immediately, these brain-attacks can create brain damage of various levels that affect a person's ability to complete basic functions such as speaking, moving and bathing.
And while science shows that damage to brain tissue cannot be undone, there are volumes of data to show that exercise can help a stroke survivor regain much of their abilities.
According to Dr. Mehmet Oz, stroke survivors who put in 30 minutes of exercise three times per week will boost their quality of life. The exercise of choice? Walking.
"Walking is a great way to postpone heart and artery troubles," Dr. Oz writes in his blog this week. "And once you have a heart attack or stroke, walking can be a safe and effective way to regain your strength and protect yourself from future cardio problems."
women walkingOz says stroke survivors who walk for 30 minutes a few times every week have a 20 percent greater endurance than those who don't walk regularly. "Walking is inexpensive, improves respiration and circulation, controls blood pressure and helps keep weight and lousy LDL cholesterol in check," he says.
The popular TV doctor advises stroke survivors to start slowly and aim for an increase in distance and endurance every six weeks. During the first six week period, Oz says, try to build up to 3,000 steps per day (in two walking sessions, if necessary), as long as your doc says it's OK.
